Book Review: The Greatest Salesman in the World

Why is it that there is such a strong stigma around sales?

Is it because we conjure up the image of the guy making call after rejected call, or knocking on door after shut door….and we feel the guilt and sadness that arises for these poor suffering souls who endure the life of a salesman?

But wait, isn’t it true that sales people are the movers and shakers of our economy?

In fact, if we are to be really honest, isn’t it true that we are ALL selling every single day?

Now I know this might bring a charge for some.   Trust me, I can relate!  I once held strongly to my belief that I was NOT  a sales type.

I had to shift my mindset on sales and invited success into my life in a way that I previously didn’t see possible.  A huge contributor to my process is the book The Greatest Salesman in the World, by Og Mandino.  It truly had a profound impact on my life, and if you haven’t read it, it comes with my highest recommendations.

But don’t be fooled by the title ~ this book is not a “how to” on sales skills, but a “how to” on life!

Here are my favorite passages from each chapter, or Scroll, of the book.

Scroll 1:    Today I begin a new life.

“As the words of these scrolls are consumed by my mysterious mind I will begin to awake, each morning, with a vitality I have never known before.  M vigor will increase, my enthusiasm will rise, my desire to meet the world will overcome every fear I once knew at sunrise, and I will be happier than I ever believed it possible to be in this world of strife and sorrow” (56).

Scroll 2:  I will greet this day with love in my heart.

“I will love the sun for it warms my bones; yet I will love the rain for it cleanses my spirit.  I will love the light for it shows me the way; yet I will love the darkness for it shows me the stars.  I will welcome happiness for it enlarges my heart/ yet I will endure sadness for it opens my soul.  I will acknowledge rewards for they are my due; yet I will welcome obstacles for they are my challenge” (59).

Scroll 3:  I will persist until I succeed.

“The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach my goal.  Failure I may still encounter at the thousandth step, yet success hides behind the next bend in the road.  Never will I know how close it lies unless I turn the corner.  Always I will take another step.  If that is of no avail I will take another, and yet another.  In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult” (64).

Scroll 4:  I am nature’s greatest miracle.

“I am not of this earth by chance.  I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand.  Henceforth will I apply my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy” (70).

Scroll 5:  I will live this day as if it’s my last.

“each hour of this day I will cherish for it can never return.  It cannot be banked today to be withdrawn on the morrow, for who can trap the wind?  Each minute of this day will I grasp with both hands and fondle with love for its value is beyond price.  What dying man can purchase another breath though he willingly give all his gold?  What price dare I place on the hours ahead?  I will make them priceless!” (75).

Scroll 6:  Today I will be master of my emotions.

“Weak is he who permits his thoughts to control his actions; strong is he who forces his actions to control his thoughts.” (80).

Scroll 7:  I will laugh  at the world.

“this too shall pass” (84).  ~ had to include this one as it is my mom’s most frequent advice! 🙂

“Never will I allow myself to become so important, so wise, so dignified, so powerful, that I forget how to laugh at myself and the world” (86).

Scroll 8:  Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.

“In setting my goals I will consider my best performance of the past and multiply it a hundredfold…..Never will I be of concern that my goals are too high for is it not better to aim my spear at the moon and strike only an eagle than to aim my spear at the eagle and strike only a rock?” (90).

Scroll 9:  I will act now.

“Action alone is the tinder which ignites the map, the parchement, this scroll, my dreams, my plans, my goals into a living force.  Action is the food and drink which will nourish my success” (94).

Scroll 10: I will pray for guidance….

“Never will I seek deliver of gold, love, good health, petty victories, fame, success or happiness.  Only for guidance will I pray, that I may be shown the way to acquire these things, and my prayer will always be answered” (99).

I hope you enjoyed those quotes as much as I did, if so, go read the book and be ready to acknowledge and embrace the principles of true wealth!

  1. Beth,

You did such a great job on this post! This book was one of the best books I ever read. I liked the fact that you shared the conversation with your Mother.Sales really is about just sharing your message with others. It is up to them what they want to do with it. Sales is all about inviting others to share in your story!

  6. Beth,

Great job you’re a fantastic communicator! I have read the entire book three times- 3x a day for 30 days on each scroll. This is the only way to read World’s Greatest because as you pointed out the words seep into your subconscious mind through Transmutation and you literally become what you are reading!! It is profound, its the same principle of Think & Grow Rich by Napolean Hill and his research with Andrew Carnegie.

  9. I like one of the quotes. Its really so true that we’re not of this earth by chance. We’re here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. So beautifully quoted it really has the power to inspire all the young aspirants.
